INAUGURAL MEETING OF THE MELROSE BUSINESS CLUB
The Greenyards played host last night to the first meeting of the Melrose Business Club. A new networking initiative with the aim of allowing business folk to connect in an informal and sociable atmosphere. Despite the fierce wind which had brought down many trees causing travel problems the event was well attended with about 20 business folks from across the Borders and beyond enjoying the presentations.
Dr Susan Brown, Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Science, Edinburgh Napier University, who is currently leading on partnerships with Super Six franchises and on Dual Career Policy. She was also joined by Katharine Mathison, Vocational Manager, The Business Development Unit of Borders College, spoke on the subject of “Academia and Business, Working Together”.
Subjects such as apprenticeships, research and internships were covered and generated various questions from the floor. Robin Purdie of Mov8financial said; “I was unaware that there were options such as modern apprenticeships available for people to do as they work so that was of interest”.
Philip Grice of Astonlark Insurance Brokers was another professional who enjoyed the event and said; “This a good addition to the local business landscape and I am delighted to have been invited to hear such impressive speakers”
David Peace, Commercial Manager of Melrose Rugby Ltd who initiated the Business Club with support from The Royal Bank of Scotland, Network Borders and the Borders Chamber of Commerce, was pleased with the attendance and the quality of the speakers, he said; “Taking account of the terrible weather we are delighted that so many Borders business folk recognised the potential of this initiative and enjoyed the speakers we had invited. We are keen to build on this initial success and we believe that the ethos we promote of people approaching each other on the basis of “What can I do for you?” is a great way to help each other in business and has obviously resonated with the business community
He continued; “our next meeting is to be on Wednesday 21 November with Business Funding as the topic and, on the strength of this first meeting we anticipate a good level of interest and response.”
