The draw for The Rotary Melrose University 7s has today been made. The inaugural tournament is supported by the Year of Young People 2018 Event Fund, managed by EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate. The tournament will host both Men’s and Ladies tournaments during the Easter weekend, Sunday 1st April with the draw as follows:
Northumbria vs St Andrews
Northumbria Ladies vs St Andrews Ladies
Glasgow University vs Stirling University
Edinburgh University Ladies vs Stirling University Ladies
Edinburgh University vs Strathclyde University
Dundee Ladies vs Northumbria Ladies
Dundee University vs Aberdeen University
Edinburgh University Ladies vs Aberdeen University Ladies
Semi Finals and plate semi-finals are scheduled to take place before Dundee Ladies take on St Andrews Ladies and Stirling Ladies take on Aberdeen Ladies. The day will draw to a close with the men’s plate final, culminating in the Ladies and Men’s finals.
During the Year of Young People 2018, Scotland puts its young people in the spotlight, celebrating their talents, contributions and creating new opportunities for them to express themselves through sport, culture and other activities. One of the eight men’s teams will battle it out to gain a place at the historic ASI Melrose Sevens on 14th April, as well as the bragging rights for that year. In the Ladies competition six teams will compete to be crowned champions with the winners and the runners up being invited back to take part in a showcase tie before the ASI Melrose Sevens final allowing them to showcase and express themselves in front of large crowds.
Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the inaugural University 7s at the historic home of sevens rugby in Melrose. In celebration of the Year of Young People 2018 university teams from across the country will have the opportunity to showcase their talents and abilities on the pitch. The competition will without a doubt guarantee an exciting, adrenaline-fuelled day for life-long fans as well as spectators new to sevens rugby.”
Partnering up with the Rotary Melrose University 7s, Global Rugby Network will be selecting four teams to wear elite GPS trackers for the tournament. The player data they collect (Acceleration, Total Distance, Top Speed) will be shared on the GRN platform and on social media
The first tie is at 12noon with a junior coaching clinic in the morning prior to the event. During the day the club will be hosting an outside bar, prosecco bar with various food vendors in attendance. The event is free to attend for all.
After the tournament the official after party in the club kicks off at 6pm, tickets can be bought from the club office or Heriot Watt University (Galashiels Campus), be sure to keep a hold of your after party ticket as this will gain you entry to Warehouse Nightclub in Galashiels should you want to party into the early hours!
