BOOKER Border League Final vs Jed-Forest (2017-2018 Season)

17 Aug 2018

With the original venue, Milntown, being unavailable the coin was tossed for choice of venue for the 2017/18 Bookers Border League final, with Riverside winning. The match, between Jed-Forest and Melrose, was played on a dull and breezy evening on an excellent pitch. The floodlights were illuminated at half-time and a light drizzle appeared near no-side. Gary Munro opened the scoring with a penalty at 5 minutes then, at 17 minutes, Melrose won a scrum 5 on the right side with Gavin Wood scoring a try to the right of the posts with Craig Jackson adding the conversion. Seven minutes later Struan Hutchison took a quick tap penalty close to the Jed line passing to Wood who needed no second invitation to score his second try. At 32 minutes Melrose won a penalty lineout in the right corner with Ben McLean burrowing over for an unconverted try. The half ended with Jackson putting in a well weighted cross-kick right to the hands of David Colvine who crossed in the right corner for a try well converted by Jackson from the touch-line.

Half time – Jed-Forest 3 Melrose 24.

The second half was only a minute old when Murdo McAndrew scampered down the far side from the Melrose 22 passing to Fraser Thomson who, in turn, off-loaded to Iain Sim who crossed for a try on the left, converted by Jackson. Four minutes later, following Jed pressure, the ball was passed across the face of the posts to Munro who scored and converted a try in the right corner. At 54 minutes Patrick Anderson was shown a yellow card for a tip tackle and from the resulting penalty lineout in the right corner Jed spun the ball wide to the left to Lewis Young who scythed through the gap in the Melrose defence to score between the posts with Munro converting. Seven minutes later, from a penalty lineout in the left corner, Richard Ferguson completed the rolling maul with a try converted by Jackson. Just before Anderson’s return to the fray, Jed won another penalty lineout in the right corner with the ball, again, being spun wide to the left for Lewis Young to repeat his previous try, this time in the left corner, and unconverted. With eight minutes remaining McAndrew broke down the stand side from a penalty lineout on the Jed 10m line and after some fine passing to the left Grant Shiells, backing up as a good prop should, received the ball and strode over for an unconverted try. Just on no-side, with Melrose defending, Anderson hoofed the ball well down-field and chased. The ball was eventually passed left to Sim who scored his second try. Hutchison ended the match with a successful conversion from the left touchline.

Melrose, thus, ended their 2017/18 season by winning the Bookers Border League having already won their first outing of 2018/19 at Peebles Sevens.
