Boroughmuir vs Melrose Scottish Cup

23 Nov 2018

The first round of this year’s Tennent’s Cup was played under the Meggetland floodlights on a cool, dry and still evening on a good pitch. Boroughmuir had all the territory and possession until, at 7 minutes, Melrose made their first foray into the Boroughmuir half of the pitch. A penalty kick was duly dispatched into the left corner and from the resultant rolling maul Russell Anderson drove over for a try converted by Struan Hutchison. Ten minutes later an episode of “handbags” lack of discipline broke out with Melrose being blamed. Gavin Parker slotted the penalty to put Boroughmuir on the scoresheet, then, at 27 minutes he repeated his efforts to double the Boroughmuir tally. Seven minutes later, with Melrose pressing only yards from the Boroughmuir line, Parker intercepted and ran the length of the field to score an unconverted try in the right corner to give Boroughmuir the lead. Patrick Anderson had done extremely well racing diagonally in defence to keep Parker on the touch-line and prevent him racing round to the posts. Just on half time Will Inglis was yellow carded for a high tackle on Hutchison who then proceeded to coolly slot the penalty to reduce the half time leeway to a single point.

Half time – Boroughmuir 11 Melrose 10

Six minutes into the second half Parker kicked his third penalty then, four minutes later, after some excellent Boroughmuir handling, Will Wardlaw crossed for a try converted by Parker. At this point Murdo McAndrew was yellow carded for an offence not obvious from the stand. At 54 minutes Melrose won a lineout on the Boroughmuir 22 and, after a huge rolling maul, Patrick Anderson scored and Hutchison converted. Three minutes later Boroughmuir retrieved their eleven point lead when Jordan Edmunds took a ball wide out on the left for a try converted by Parker. After a series of plays, at 62 minutes, Iain Moody crashed over for a try, but, unfortunately, Hutchison’s attempted conversion hit the left upright and stayed out. Within a couple of minutes Melrose won a scrum 5 on the left. With the ball being passed right Jason Baggott ran a fine line for a try with Hutchison’s conversion giving Melrose a single point lead. Then, at 78 minutes, Baggott, along with several other Melrose players, joined in a rolling maul from a penalty lineout and came up with the ball when the try was awarded. Hutchison’s conversion took the Melrose lead to eight points and, despite the kick-off being taken, Melrose managed to thwart any further scoring by the hosts. Victory this evening was achieved by patience and composure in the face of adversity.
