BT Cup Semi Final Watsonians vs Melrose

31 Mar 2018

The semi-final of this year’s BT Cup was played on a cold and damp afternoon with a stiff breeze blowing the length of the Myreside pitch. Each team had the benefit of a Scottish front row player returning from injury, Ross Ford playing the first half for Melrose and Darryl Marfo the second half for Watsonians. Melrose started by playing into the breeze and, with four minutes on the clock, Murdo McAndrew broke within his own half and raced down the stand side off-loading to Jason Baggott who, in turn, passed inside to Ross McCann who finished the move with a try, on the left, converted by Craig Jackson. At 19 minutes, from a scrum on the right side, Baggott steamed up the pitch and when he was caught just short of the line James Head continued the movement before off-loading to Austin Lockington who claimed the try to the left of the posts. Jackson, again, converted. On the half hour Watsonians exerted pressure before Rory Steele flung out a long pass to Jason Harries who sped into the left corner for a try which Ali Harris converted.

Half time – Watsonians 7 Melrose 14

The beginning of the second half was characterised by a game of aerial ping-pong without either side gaining supremacy. At 57 minutes Jackson increased the Melrose lead with a penalty. During the next quarter of an hour Melrose were guilty, on a couple of occasions, of over-cooking kicks ahead in attack which rolled over the dead ball line allowing Watsonians to gain scrums on either side of the halfway line. With seven minutes remaining Ali Grieve was sent to the sin bin for a late tackle and, shortly after, as no-side approached, Price kicked his second penalty. The Melrose defence then held out to secure victory.

As a result of Stirling County defeating Hawick in the other semi-final this year’s BT Cup Final at BT Murrayfield on Saturday, 28th April at 4.30pm will be contested between Melrose and Stirling County.
