BT National Reserve League Melrose Storm Currie Chieftains A

30 Sep 2017

Melrose Storm 55 - 3 Currie Chieftains

In a top versus bottom of the league clash it was not very long before Storm showed their superiority with a try from their very first attack. Currie kicked off and a knock-on brought the first scrum. The Melrose pack pushed their opponents backwards and caused havoc at the base of the Currie scrum and from the turn over ball the support running of forwards and backs was finished off by Ben Mclean with Struan Hutchison converting. Several unforced handling errors by both sides saw the game up and down the pitch without any addition to the score. When they did managed to hold on to the ball the Melrose side did look dangerous. Successfully getting the ball to the wing saw Lewis Mallin put clear and left him with a sprint to the corner. A period of sustained pressure from the visitors resulted in a penalty that was converted. The rest of the half saw both sides fail to capitalise on the mistakes being made and a half time score of 12 3.

For the first couple of minutes of the second half Currie looked the more likely to score until a break away finished with Ali Grieve scoring between the posts. Hutchison converted. In the next attack it was a rolling maul that produced the fourth try with Grieve last to get up from the pile of bodies that collapsed as the maul crossed the line.

With twenty minutes to go the flood gates opened, the passing started to stick and the support running produced holes in the Currie defence that produced five tries. Aaron Welsh powered over from a couple of metres out, while James Brown demonstrated raw pace in a traditional wingers score. Gary McWilliam then ran in two scores that were split by a scrum half's opportunist touch down. Struan Hutchison finished the afternoon with a try and five conversions for a personal tally of 15 points. Having lost their 18 month unbeaten run in the first match of the season they have now scored 32 tries in five games and returned to the top of National Reserve league 1.
