BT Premiership Round 1 Melrose Watsonians
02 Sep 2017
The 2017/18 BT Premiership started on a fine, warm and still afternoon on a Greenyards pitch which was in excellent condition. Ewan Fox opened the scoring by kicking Watsonians into a three point lead with a penalty at 3 minutes. On 6 minutes Melrose put in a rolling maul in the Policeman's Corner with, when it ended, the ball being spun left across the pitch to Fraser Thomson who, in turn, passed to Sam Pecqueur who dived into the Town Corner for the opening try of the match. Within two minutes Watsonians were reduced to 14 men when Angus Duckett was yellow carded for an offence on the ground. On 10 minutes Melrose won another penalty lineout on the right with the ball, again, being passed left to Thomson who, in the Town Corner, scored his first try of the afternoon. This time Craig Jackson slotted the conversion. Before Duckett's return from the sin-bin he was joined by Kyle White for a lineout offence leaving Watsonians with only 13 players on the pitch. As a result of this misdemeanour Melrose won a penalty lineout in the Town Corner and, following a rolling maul, Russell Anderson drove over for a try converted by Jackson. With 27 minutes on the clock, and between the Watsonians 10 & 22m lines, Melrose turned Watsonians over with Grant Runciman making a weaving solo run to score the Melrose bonus-point try between the posts. Jackson added the extras. Five minutes short of the interval Jackson kicked ahead with the ball being collected by Ally Miller who raced in for a try between the posts, Jackson, again, converting. Just on the interval Watsonians won a penalty lineout in the Church Corner and, from a rolling maul, Duckett crossed the whitewash with Fox converting.
Half time: Melrose 33 Watsonians 10.
Fourteen minutes into the second half Ross McCann collected the ball on the Watsonian 22 and jinked over for a try between the posts with Jason Baggott converting. Nine minutes later Melrose picked and drove on the left with the ball eventually being passed cross-field to Thomson who scored his second try, this time in St. Mary's Corner. Ben Chalmers kicked an excellent conversion from the touch-line. Within two minutes Melrose put in an excellent passing move down the far touch-line with Thomson diving into the Church Corner for his hat-trick try, which just happened to be his 100th try for Melrose. Chalmers, again, converted, this time from the opposite touch-line. Almost from the re-start Watsonians put together a fine passing move with Michael Allen crossing for a try converted by Fox. With Melrose now down to 14 men, Bruce Colvine being sin-binned for a high tackle, Watsonians spread the ball wide to the left and, with Melrose running out of defenders, Duckett ended the match with his second try, this time in the Town Corner.
