BT Premiership Round 2 Melrose Boroughmuir
09 Sep 2017
The second round of BT Premiership matches was played on a fine, dry and still afternoon on a firm Greenyards pitch. The first ten minutes saw both teams sizing each other up before Ciaran Whyte put the visitors into the lead with a penalty. Five minutes later Lewis Carmichael was sin-binned for a spear tackle and from the resulting penalty line-out, in the Town Corner, Melrose drove for the line. The ball came to Craig Jackson whose cross-field kick to the right corner was fielded by Ross McCann who dived into the Policeman's Corner for the opening try. At 22 minutes Melrose, again, attacked the Town Corner with the ball eventually being passed across the face of the posts to Fraser Thomson who raced into the Policeman's Corner for a try. Whyte was unsuccessful with a couple of penalty attempts in the second quarter.
Half time: Melrose 10 Boroughmuir 3.
Two minutes into the second half Melrose won a penalty line-out in the Church Corner and, from the resultant maul, crabbing right, Murdo McAndrew chipped the ball left to Sam Pecqueur who dived into the Church Corner for a try converted by Jackson. Nine minutes later Boroughmuir broke down the stand side and, from a rolling maul in the Town Corner, Dan Marek drove over for a try. The Melrose bonus point try came at 51 minutes when Grant Runciman completed a rolling maul from a penalty line-out in St. Mary's Corner. Melrose received the ball on the far side from the kick off and broke down the touch line with James Johnstone skinning the Boroughmuir defence before off-loading to Thomson who scored in the Church Corner with Jackson converting from the touch-line. Five minutes later Melrose won a scrum some 10m from the visitor's line with Bruce Colvine passing to Pecqueur who raced into the Church Corner for a try. On 68 minutes Melrose, again, broke up the far side with Colvine finishing the move with a try in the Church Corner. At 73 minutes, with Melrose pressing, Mark Hare was yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on. Melrose opted for the scrum, and with the scrum won, Colvine juggled the ball over the line for a try at the posts. Jackson converted. Just after the re-start Ruairi McLeod was sin-binned for nefarious practice on the ground. From the resulting line-out Boroughmuir picked and drove with Carmichael crashing over for a try converted by Whyte. With no-side approaching fast Melrose won a scrum on the right close to the Boroughmuir line with the ball being passed left to Pecqueur who sped into the Church Corner for his hat-trick try. Jackson's attempted conversion ended the match.
