BT Premiership Round 3 Ayr Melrose

16 Sep 2017

In contrast to the beautiful weather for the BT Charity Shield match three weeks ago to-day's visit to the seaside was met with dreich conditions and a pitch that was, at times, on the slippery side. Two minutes into the match Melrose won a penalty lineout in the right corner and, following a rolling maul crabbing left, Russell Anderson crashed over near the posts for the opening try which Craig Jackson converted. The Ayr account was opened two minutes later with a Scott Lyle penalty. With only 8 minutes on the clock Melrose passing split the Ayr defence and Sam Pecqueur shimmied in between the posts for a try which Jackson, again, converted. Lyle completed the first quarter hour by kicking wide with a penalty attempt. At 27 minutes Ross McCann thwarted the Ayr defence to dive into the right corner for a try which Jackson converted well from the touch-line. Jackson added to the Melrose tally by kicking a penalty three minutes later. Melrose guddled the kick-off and with Ayr pressing McCann managed an interception within the Melrose 22 and took off up the stand side. Although the Ayr defence managed to keep him to the touch-line they were unable to prevent him from scoring the Melrose bonus point try in the right corner. Jackson, again, managed a difficult conversion. Four minutes from the interval Ayr pressed the Melrose line and following fine cross-field passing Craig Gossman sent Grant Anderson into the left corner for a try converted by Lyle.

Half Time: Ayr 10 Melrose 31.

Jackson opened the second half scoring, at 48 minutes, with a penalty. Five minutes later Ruairi McLeod pulled down a penalty lineout maul and earned for himself a yellow card and for Ayr a penalty try. Although Ayr had upped their efforts the Melrose defence held firm and there were no further scores.
