BT Premiership Round 5 Melrose Currie

30 Sep 2017

Round 5 of the BT Premiership was played on a fine, still afternoon and, despite overnight rain, on a pitch in surprisingly good condition. With five minutes played Melrose put in a lineout drive towards the Policeman's Corner. The ball was then passed cross-field to Ross McCann who dived into the Town Corner for his, and the games, first try. At 19 minutes the above scenario was repeated, but, this time, it was Neil Irvine-Hess who crossed the whitewash. Three minutes later Currie's woes were compounded by the award of a yellow card to Luke Crosbie for collapsing a maul just short of their try line, but their defence held and it was Currie, courtesy of a Jamie Forbes penalty at 30 minutes, who made the only score in the ten minute period.

Half time: Melrose 10 Currie Chieftains 3

The spectators were hardly in their seats for the second half before Melrose won a scrum on the right and, after great cross-field passing Fraser Thomson raced in for a try near the Church Corner. Craig Jackson's third attempt at a conversion was successful. With eight minutes of the half played Vince Wright was sent to the sin-bin for a dangerous tackle. The Melrose bonus point try came six minutes later with the ball, again, being passed left to Thomson who off-loaded to McCann for his second try; Jackson converting. At 61 minutes Melrose, again, won a scrum on the right, with the ball going left, to McCann for his hat-trick try. Four minutes after that Melrose put in a rolling maul from a penalty line-out in St. Mary's Corner with Richard Ferguson claiming the try. With half an hour of the second half played Currie made a great break and after some fine passing Harvey Elms crossed in the Town Corner for a try which Forbes converted well, from the touch-line. With a minute remaining McCann chipped the ball ahead bouncing it off a Currie shoulder and re-collecting it to race to the Church Corner for his fourth try. The game ended with Jackson converting via the upright.
