BT Premiership Round 9, Melrose v Hawick
28 Oct 2017
For the final match of the first half of this year's BT Premiership the weather was dreich and a cold wind blew. Melrose, who were seven players light of the squad which was victorious over Heriots last Saturday, played into the wind and, at 6 minutes, were three points down to an Ali Weir penalty. Four minutes later Melrose won a penalty lineout and Richard Ferguson drove over from the resulting maul in the Policeman's Corner with Craig Jackson adding the conversion. Almost from the re-start Angus Runciman was sent to the sin bin for a dodgy tackle and Stuart Graham for retaliation. Surprisingly, the decision was not reversed for the retaliation and Weir kicked the penalty. On 15 minutes James Head made a break down the far side off-loading to Fraser Thomson who dummied his way past the Hawick defence to score an unconverted try in the Policeman's Corner. With 25 minutes played Melrose won a penalty lineout with Murdo McAndrew nipping up the blind side to score an unconverted try in the Policeman's Corner. The Melrose bonus point try came at 33 minutes when Grant Shiells completed a series of picks and drives diving over for a try to the left of the posts. Jackson's conversion was successful courtesy of the right hand upright.
Half time: Melrose 24 Hawick 6
It was 19 minutes into the second half before the next try. After a period of sustained pressure, with the ball being passed backwards and forwards across the face of the posts, Gary Munro scored a try in the Policeman's Corner with Weir converting. Jackson, however, increased the Melrose tally by kicking penalties at 65 & 70 minutes, before Grant Runciman, at 78 minutes, was yellow carded for a 'team offence' on the ground. Immediately after Munro claimed his second try and Weir's conversion ended the match.
Congratulations are extended to Nyle Godsmark, Ross McCann & Sam Pecqueur who were playing in the Scotland Sevens squad in South Africa - a much warmer experience!
