Edinburgh Accies vs Melrose

09 Dec 2018

To-day’s Tennent’s Premiership match was played on a dull afternoon, with the breeze and showers appearing at the interval, and on a good playing surface. Four minutes into the match Fraser Thomson ended a period of Melrose pressure by diving into the right corner for an unconverted try. Four minutes later a Melrose clearance kick rebounded and was picked up by an Accies player. Accies then put in a series of plays across the pitch to Michael Badenhorst who levelled the score by diving into the left corner for an unconverted try. At eleven minutes Melrose won a lineout on the Accies 22 and put in a massive rolling maul completed with a Russell Anderson try converted by Jason Baggott. James Loomis missed a penalty at 20 minutes before Melrose pressed inside the Accies 22 spreading the ball backwards and forwards across the pitch, Bruce Colvine finishing the move with an unconverted try in the left corner. At 33 minutes Cammy Gray was yellow carded for a deliberate knock on and from the resulting penalty lineout Gavin Wood trotted into the left corner for the Melrose bonus point, unconverted, try. Six minutes later Accies woes were deepened with Badenhorst being yellow carded for an early tackle on Thomson with the try line begging. From the resultant penalty lineout Russell Anderson completed the rolling maul with a try converted by Baggott.

Half time – Edinburgh Accies 5 Melrose 29

Ten minutes into the second half Baggott collapsed an Accies rolling maul earning himself a yellow card and Accies a penalty try. With 54 minutes played Murdo McAndrew ended a period of unrelenting Melrose pressure with a try converted by Craig Jackson. Richard Ferguson ended a rolling maul, at 74 minutes, with an unconverted try, and, four minutes later, Melrose won a scrum 5 on the right before passing cross-field to Patrick Anderson whose try on the left was converted by Struan Hutchison. The match ended with Badenhorst, exhibiting an amazing turn of speed for a second row forward, scoring an unconverted try in the right corner. With conditions as they were it was disappointing that seven of the eleven kicks at goal were missed.
