Melrose Storm vs Hamilton | 19 - 19
14 Jan 2017
Champions - unofficially at least...!
Melrose Storm are BT National Reserve League Division 1 Champions for the second year in succession as a result of their away match at Hamilton on Saturday.
Although experiencing their tightest result of the season so far, the Storm retained their unbeaten record with a 19 - 19 draw against a very determined Lanarkshire side.
On what was a remarkably good playing surface given the recent weather conditions, both sides struggled to achieve any fluency in their play but it was Melrose who broke the deadlock half way through the first period when prop Callum Crookshanks showed his strength to complete a fine move and David Colvine converted the kick.
Further pressure from the Storm resulted in Thomas Klein dribbling through and kicking ahead to claim a further unconverted try to make the score 0 -12.
Hamilton’s forwards started to gain some momentum as the match progressed and their territorial advantage resulted in a try in the corner which they converted with an excellent kick to make it 7 – 12 at half time.
The second half started brightly for the Storm with a further try from Callum Crookshanks again converted by David Colvine but credit to the home team who never gave up and their strong pack kept the pressure on and scored 2 late tries, one of which was uncoverted so the match finished 19 -19.
It was also good to see a number of young Wasp players being fielded against a big, powerful opposition.
The Storm will be presented with their trophy at a later date”.
