Melrose vs Peebles 23.2.19

23 Feb 2019

The last fixture of the Booker Border League Pool A section saw a youthful Melrose team, seeking a third successive title in the competition, take on Peebles at the Greenyards.

For the first 10 minutes of the tie Melrose were camped in the Peebles 22 and despite stout defence from the visitors, the pressure paid off when Gavin Wood broke through to score under the posts, David Colvine converting. Three minutes later, Iain Sim took advantage of fine passing through the three quarters to touch down in the Church Corner. On 20 minutes, Peebles were close to opening their own account in the Town Corner, but a foot in touch denied them. From the resulting lineout, Gary McWilliam hacked clear, and a subsequent steal by Calum Crookshanks created an overlap on the left of the field, Sim again benefitting to run clear and dot down under the posts.

Two minutes later, David Colvine scored the home team’s bonus try. Andrew Jardine read a long Peebles pass and intercepted, but lacking the gas to make the try his own, managed to keep the ball alive and recycle to Colvine who touched down in the St. Mary’s Corner, then nailed the tricky conversion. As the half drew to a close, Jack Harrison of Peebles received the first of three yellow cards of the day, allowing Melrose the space to pile more pressure, much of which was absorbed by the visitors until Gary McWilliam breached the line in the St Mary’s Corner.

Half Time: Melrose 31, Peebles 0

The second half started in similar fashion to the first, Melrose camped in the opposition 22, and Peebles resolutely defending, undone eventually by another yellow, this time to flanker Stuart Hunter. David Colvine found the gap in the Town Corner, took an impressive flying leap to touch down, but in the process received an injury in the tackle which would end his day. Hopefully a personal total of 16 points will have eased his pain.

With 15 minutes left of play, Richard Ferguson was sent to the sin bin, and so Peebles took their opportunity to turn the screw and get themselves on the scoreboard. In a reversal of fortunes, the visitors ploughed away at the try line against stiff opposition, Willie Aitken eventually charging over to claim his team’s unconverted try. The action was not quite finished though, with Darren King having the final say for the home team deep into 80+ minutes, following nifty footwork from Thomas Klein.

This result means Melrose have indeed reached the Bookers Border League final, where we will meet Hawick at a date and venue to be confirmed.
