Melrose vs Selkirk 23.12.17
23 Dec 2017
To-day's Booker Border League clash was played in bright conditions with a chill breeze and on a firm playing surface. Melrose opened the game with their backs to the wind and low sun and, with 12 minutes played Gavin Wood pinched a Selkirk ball within the Melrose half in front of the stand and having made ground off-loaded to George Taylor who scored a try, converted by Craig Jackson, between the posts. Three minutes later Iain Moody breenged up the park off-loading, just short of the line, to Jason Baggott whose try at the posts was converted by Jackson. On 19 minutes Ally Grieve was sin-binned for a stupid act of foul play. Turnover ball in the Melrose 22, at 26 minutes, saw Nyle Godsmark flash up the far side eventually passing to Ross McCann who finished the move with an unconverted try in the Church Corner. A rolling maul near the posts, at 33 minutes, was finished with the ball being passed to Wood who scored the unconverted Melrose bonus point try in St. Mary's Corner.
Half time: Melrose 24 Selkirk 0
The second half had hardly started when Matt Robertson was yellow carded for foul play. On 52 minutes Melrose were pressing on the right , the ball then passed left to Thomas Klein who squeezed into the Town Corner for a try. Jackson's attempted conversion from the touch-line was held up in the wind and did not reach the posts. Four minutes later Taylor made considerable ground up the far side passing to Wood who scored an unconverted try in the Policeman's Corner. Almost from the kick off Taylor pounced on a loose ball and raced into the Town Corner for a try. Jackson's attempted conversion was, again, held up in the wind. Melrose continued to press and, following a series of picks and drives, Russell Anderson bullocked his way over for an unconverted try to the right of the posts. Shortly after David Anderson did not help the Selkirk cause by taking out a Melrose attacker without the ball and ending his game sitting in the sin bin. Melrose took a scrum for the penalty and, in the act of driving towards the line, Struan Hutchison nipped over for an unconverted try near the Policeman's Corner.
