The final straight

05 Apr 2017

We are well into the countdown for this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Melrose Sevens and the ground is taking shape with the stands and marquees going up and the enclosure seating being built around the pitch. It has been a marker in the social and sporting calendar for many years now and it would be easy to take it for granted that it will keep on happening, but if it wasn’t for the year-round effort of the volunteers in the club and especially the Sevens Committee convened by Ian Cooper with secretary Gordon Chisholm it could easily have lost its prominence.

The sevens circuit is now severely impacted by the fifteens season’s finale of both BT Premiership Play-Off and BT Cup Finals Day. And this year we have made both. It is an outstanding achievement by the players and coaches. On the other side stand Ayr looking to achieve the exact same feat, and yet neither of us have won any silverware and all is to play for. If this isn’t the sharp end of competitive sport I don’t know what is.

Ayr are mustering their support for the journey over to The Greenyards on the 15th, and I hope you have the chance to come down too and join in the drama. It’s a long season, and the players have worked hard to get to this stage. They really value the support you’ve shown them over the season, so, if you can, please see them over the finishing line.
