Currie v Melrose
Currie Chieftains v Melrose – 7/9/24
Having left the Borders in gloriously warm sunshine it was a disappointment to arrive at Malleny Park in dull and cloudy conditions with a chilly breeze for this Round 2 match in the Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership. Within three minutes Currie put in a series of plays ending with Ryan Daley scoring an unconverted try in the left corner. Melrose were not hanging about and, two minutes later, Jerry Blyth-Lafferty raced down the stand side with Robin Sharp scoring in the left corner and Luke Townsend adding the extras. Two quick tap penalties, at 11 minutes, let Rhys Davis scamper into the left corner for an unconverted try. At 35 minutes, following a series of plays after a penalty in front of the posts, Cairn Ramsay scored and Scott Clark converted. Back came Melrose with Zen Sxwagrzak scoring and Keiran Clark converting to end the half.
Half time – Currie Chieftains 17 Melrose 14.
Eight minutes into the second half Szwagrzak completed a penalty lineout rolling maul with a try converted by Clark, then six minutes later, Currie broke out from their own 22 with Iain Sim scoring an unconverted bonus point try in the right corner. At 63 minutes the Currie defence guddled a Melrose kick through to the right corner with Clark latching on to the loose ball for the Melrose bonus point try which he converted himself. With five minutes remaining Ed Hasdell broke out on an 80m run down the right side, the ball eventually reaching Alex Harley who scored in the left corner. Much to the relief of the Melrose supporters, and the chagrin of the home faithful, the conversion attempt bounced back off the post allowing Melrose a single point victory.
