Marr v Melrose 26/10/24
Marr v Melrose- 26/10/24
Round 9 of the Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership was played on a soft surface with a strong wind blowing the length of the pitch throughout. After six minutes, and playing into the wind, the hosts, having put the visitors under pressure, benefitted from a penalty lineout rolling maul and a series of plays with Brandon Sweet bulldozing over for an unconverted try to the left of the posts, Declan Mulcahy having charged down the conversion. At 23 minutes, with penalty advantage being played, Roly Brett made a break and quick ball to Luke Townsend saw the no. 10 confuse the Marr defence and dance over for a try converted by Keiran Clark. Melrose continued to press, but were thwarted by stout Marr defence. Just before the break Angus Runciman collected a lineout ball and from the maul made 10m before Struan Hutchison, coming in on the crash, scored an unconverted try as Scott Clelland was sent to the naughty step for skullduggery in the build up to the try.
Half time – Marr 5 Melrose 12.
Both teams pressed intermittently at the start of the second half before, at 52 minutes, Elliot Ruthven was sin-binned for interfering, having not retreated 10m at a Marr penalty. At 58 minutes Grant Baird knocked on over the line going for a try, but shortly after Clelland drove over under the posts with Calum Inglis’ conversion tying the scores. Five minutes later, from a penalty lineout rolling maul, Logan Kirk drove over for an unconverted try. Shortly after, Craig Miller was yellow carded for a cynical foul. With five minutes remaining the wind dropped a little allowing Melrose to play wide and, with space on the right, Hamish Weir scrambled over for the Melrose, unconverted, bonus point try.
