Melrose Rugby Bulletin 21/8/24

Evening Everyone!

Hope you’ve managed to avoid the rain & not got blown away in the wind this week! We’ve got lots to share this week, so buckle up for an info overload!!

It was a weird old day at Gala on Saturday, with Currie, then Selkirk pulling out at the last minute. This meant that that the two remaining teams in these Pools had to play each other twice with the team with the better aggregate score advancing to the Semi-finals. Unfortunately for us, although we beat Hawick in the first game 17 – 12 the beat us in the second game 29-21 and edged the win by 3 points progressing to the semis where they were beaten by Edinburgh Accies, who then lost to eventual winners, Gala! For all scores CLICK HERE.

This weekend…

It's a big day at the club this Saturday with our annual ‘Evie’s Crichton Cup’, starting at 11am followed by the 1XV taking on Alnwick at 4pm. Come on down and support the teams and see how much we can raise for Evie! If you don’t know about Evie’s Crichton Cup here’s a little bit of info!

It’s a charity fundraiser for Evie Mitchell who is living with Battens Disease, Evie’s family have been involved with the Club for many years, her dad Wayne is a former player & brother Finlay plays in his age group too. The family are enthusiastic Melrose supporters. Battens is a particularly unpleasant life limiting neurodegenerative disorder that leads to impairment, seizures, vision loss & motor problems, so any support to raise money on Saturday would be much appreciated. The tournament is made up by players playing for their ‘district’ within the area, so we have teams representing Gattonside, Newstead, Earlston etc…we’ve got young and old playing, so hopefully we’ll see some great rugby! There will be fun things for the kids, I've heard mention of a bouncy castle among other things! There is going to be a Barbeque on the go too – if anyone has an hour or so to spare, we’d appreciate as many volunteers as possible to help on the grill – many hands make light work!  If you can help, please let Ally know - you can email her on events@melroserugby.org

At 4pm we’ll welcome the boys from Alnwick onto the pitch for a pre-season friendly – so a very full day of rugby to come this weekend!

Membership

Thanks to everyone who has renewed their membership & welcome to the club to all our new members, it’s been great chatting or emailing with some of you and finding out your stories of why you’ve joined & what your connections with the club and town are! If you’ve not signed up yet, we’d love you to do so sooner rather than later. Currently last year’s members who haven’t paid yet are still getting this newsletter, but we’ll redo the mailing list at the end of September to reflect the 2024/25 membership. Click here to join the club for the season.

(Apologies, Struan has already been snapped up!)

Saturday 31st - Melrose v Heriots Blues & our Boozy Brunch

Next Saturday sees the opening match of the Premiership; to celebrate we're hosting our inaugural 'Boozy Brunch'! If you'd like to join in the fun, please sign up through the website asap so Ally can get everything confirmed - the tables are filling up! CLICK HERE to book!

You may have noticed that the Ned Haig has been out of action over the summer, well there's been lots of activity in there these last 2 weeks! Mr Tait has been in with his brushes, Dougie Dodds & Nick Bevon have been working on the joinery & floors, and the boys from Bruce Colvine Electrical have been in there too...it's very nearly ready - a few finishing touches to go, but we hope you like it! It's fantastic to see how many talented members of the club we have doing the work!

I think that's it for this week - I'll be in the office or around the club on Saturday for anyone looking to pay their membership or pick up their card. You won't need your membership card to get in this week, but there will be charity donation buckets ready to relieve you of some cash!

See you at the weekend,

Best wishes

Hilary
